If your family is expecting to make a military move next summer, making your medical
arrangements and appointments now and over the next few months is crucial to the success of your move from Fort Leavenworth.
Service members and their families are encouraged to be proactive in preparation for a
summer transition. Specific to Fort Leavenworth, many services across the installation operate at capacity to prepare for the summer move cycle known as “summer surge”.
Medical services across the region have been impacted by COVID-19 mitigation and staffing strains, further complicating medical appointment access in 2021. There are several medical steps your family can complete even without the request for orders in hand.
Exceptional Family Member Program renewal
One important date to know if you have family members enrolled in the Exceptional
Family Member Program is the expiration date of EFMP enrollment. EFMP enrollment expires every three years. Travel decisions for family members will not be made within six months of EFMP expiration. The Air Force has additional requirements for family member relocation clearance processes specific to their service.
Munson Army Health Clinic’s EFMP coordination office is affected by Fort Leavenworth’s summer surge, with peak timing for EFMP support requests February through April every year. Service members and their families are encouraged to renew early to avoid expiration during the peak EFMP season and to allow plenty of time to accommodate pandemic-related delays.
The MAHC EFMP coordinator office at (913) 684-6770 is the point of contact to initiate
screening appointments, gain assistance with EFMP forms and verify EFMP expiration dates. Families with EFMP members also have the Army Community Service EFMP office, in the Resiliency Center at 600 Thomas Ave., available as a resource for information and social support. Overseas assignments require family member screening
When request for orders are received by service members for locations outside of the continental United States, including Hawaii and Alaska installations, all family members accompanying the service member must be screened before travel through the EFMP office. The Family Member Travel Screening ensures that service members are assigned to locations that can support their families’ medical needs. To ensure a smooth FMTS process, all family members must have recent physical exams completed within a year.

Another way that families can be proactive is to ensure all medical referrals are completed quickly. Open medical referrals are a common delay to completion of FMTS. MAHC patrons may contact the Referral Management Office at (913) 684-6332 to verify
all referrals have been completed.
