We celebrate Labor Day across the country to recognize the achievements of American workers and the contributions they made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. Our Soldiers and civilians have good reasons to be especially proud of the work they do every day. You deserve a day off and should take the time to enjoy this holiday weekend — but do it with appropriate planning and awareness for safety.
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. Highways and recreation areas will be busy as people take advantage of the remaining good weather. Boating, swimming, motorcycle riding, grilling, camping and hiking are some of the recreation activities that we will enjoy during this long weekend. Like anything else, each of these activities has its risks. Know the risks and what to do to avoid them. The IMCOM Spring - Summer Brochure, located at http://www.imcom.army.mil/hq/about/organization/officecom/safety/, has solid safety information to help you in planning.
It’s important to think before you drink, not only when driving but anytime. It has been said many times before but bears repeating — never get behind the wheel of a vehicle or a boat after drinking nor ride with someone who has been drinking.
Follow the rules of the road. Seat belts, speed limits, traffic signals, and personal protective equipment for motorcyclists (required at all times for Soldiers per AR 385-10) are all designed to help you get to your destination safely. TRiPS, located on the U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center website (https://crc.army.mil), will help you apply Composite Risk Management to your trip planning before and during traveling.
With the start of a new school year, more children are on the streets. Daylight hours are growing shorter, which means poorer visibility. Stay alert and watch for school children standing at the curb, exiting from a bus, and walking or riding a bike along the street.
Sarah and I extend our deepest gratitude to every Soldier, civilian and family member for all they do for our nation. I am proud to serve alongside every one of you. We hope you enjoy a fun, relaxing, safe holiday with family and friends.
Remember, you are the last line of defense against an accident at work, at home, and at play. Please be smart, be safe, and look out for other Soldiers, family members and civilians. We’re counting on everyone to maintain focus on safety during this holiday weekend and beyond. Together, we can save lives.
Support and Defend!
