There is nothing more important than safeguarding our community and the individuals that comprise it. Therefore, I have made it a priority to combat the growing trend of negligent drivers. Whether speeding or talking on the cell phone, inattentive drivers put all of us at risk. Our success in this effort depends on you — only by working together can we make our community safer.
In fiscal year 2011, I established the Fort Leavenworth Community Health Promotion Council as an overall effort to integrate, synchronize and implement a multi-disciplinary approach to safety, health promotion, risk reduction, and suicide prevention. This forum provides commanders and supervisors programs, services and resources to reduce at-risk behaviors.
The results of this forum determined that we have a systemic traffic safety problem here on Fort Leavenworth.
The statistics of distracted driving are staggering. A distracted driver is four times more likely to be involved in a crash than someone focused on driving. A driver who is texting is at least 20 times more likely to be involved in an accident than someone who is not.
Experience has proven that an aggressive combination of strong laws, effective law enforcement, and public education can change behavior. Organizational policies that educate employees are a key element to this comprehensive strategy. If we are to succeed, each organization — military and civilian alike — must do its part to develop strong policies and educate its employees.
Please join us in this critical effort. Help us protect Soldiers, families, friends, and co-workers. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving, please visit www.distraction.gov.
Every death and injury caused by distracted driving is preventable.  Help us put a stop to this unnecessary risk.
