The nation’s oldest regional Veterans Day observance will begin in downtown Leavenworth at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11. This year’s parade theme is “America — Thanks to Veterans.”
The parade route will be 4th and Cherokee street east to Esplanade, north to Delaware, west to 7th Street, south to Cherokee, east on Cherokee to 5th Street where the parade will disband. The line of parade will start with bagpiper Dale Cleland and the 15th Military Police Brigade Color Guard.
The parade will stop at 11 a.m. for Taps followed by a flyover by the Iowa Air National Guard.
Following the flyover, an enlistment ceremony will be conducted in front of reviewing stand by Lt. Col. Tom Bayer, commander of the Combined Arms Center Special Troops Battalion.
More than 150 participants have been invited to participate in this 92nd annual event. Parade participants will include the military contingent of Fort Leavenworth; Maj. Gen. John Daveron, commander of the 35th Infantry Division, Kansas National Guard; Rep. Lynn Jenkins; Sen. Jerry Moran; 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiment Buffalo Soldiers; Tuskegee Airmen and other World War II veterans; Leavenworth Mayor Mark Priesinger; Tonganoxie Mayor Jason Ward; local and state politicians; local federal officials; Boy and Girl Scouts; a Vietnam-era helicopter; the Abdullah Shrine; area school bands; numerous horse groups; Junior ROTC units; police and fire agencies from Kansas and Missouri; numerous motorcycle groups and antique car groups; veteran service and fraternal organizations.
There will be a special float in parade from MacNamara Moore American Legion Post 61, Ida Grove, Iowa, which will be a reproduction of the historic flag raised on Feb. 23, 1945, at Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima.
As always, the parade is dedicated to the many veterans, as well as active-duty service members still engaged in conflicts around the world.
The 2011 parade chairman is James Rodgers, representing the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 55, and the grand marshal is retired Brig. Gen. Stan Cherrie. Following the grand marshal and parade chairman will be the “Returning Hero” float.
Monetary awards will be given for best floats in first, second and third place categories. Floats will be judged on parade theme, and on originality, creativity and patriotism. Judging will be done by Mark Olsen, Brett Miller and Jamie Carlisle. Emcees for the parade are Mike Howell (4th and Cherokee), Bill Wallace (300 block Delaware) and Dan Wiley (7th and Delaware).
The Leavenworth Rotary Club will sponsor a veterans breakfast 7-10 a.m. before the parade at Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade. Cost is $6 and all disabled veterans will get their breakfast free.
