On Sept. 19, the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign kicked off to a small crowd of military leaders and federal employees at Trails West Golf Course.
Some in the audience were faced with tough economic decisions, which affect our installation and many of our federal employees.
Fort Leavenworth officials set a goal of six weeks to raise $300,000 for the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign. Contributors in the community did it in four. With pledges still coming in, the generosity of our federal employees is humbling.
To say the conditions we faced as we kicked this off were not optimal for charity fundraising is an understatement.
The Fort Leavenworth community answered the call and through their generosity and hard work, they quickly beat the goal setting a new high-water mark — but I expect it to go up even higher. We built a team of teams, which canvassed the community and spread the CFC message to guarantee success. Lastly, I had the support of the entire Fort Leavenworth Command Group, knowing I could leverage key leaders if the campaign needed it proved invaluable.
The Combined Federal Campaign allows all federal government employees to donate to various charities through payroll deduction. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, CFC’s mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective.
Local CFC-supported organizations include Women’s Community Y, the Command and General Staff College Foundation, Special Olympics, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and many others.
Last year’s goal was $230,000 and Fort Leavenworth actually pledged $352,000, beating that year’s goal as well. While the annual CFC drive ended Nov. 15, people can continue to make pledges to CFC throughout the year. To do so, visit www.heartlandcfc.org.  The 2011 goal for Heartland CFC is $4.7 million.
To donate, contact your organization’s CFC representative or the Combined Federal Campaign coordinator at 684-1674, e-mail benjamin.c.fonte.naf@mail.mil.
