What should consumers do if they feel a local business is dishonest with them? How can they file a complaint against that business?
Most large and small businesses operate their business with honesty and integrity. There are exceptions, however, and because service members and their families are frequently the target of consumer offers, it is important to know what they can do if they feel they have been cheated.
Consumers should first try to resolve complaints through the company. It may well be that the parties can resolve the issue without getting a third party involved. Often, misunderstandings can quickly be resolved.
Sometimes, however, a case is so egregious that a complaint should be filed. Consumers can file a complaint at the Kansas Office of the Attorney General, 120 SW 10th Street, 2nd Floor, Topeka, KS 66612. The Consumer Hotline is (785) 296-3751 or (800) 432-2310. A consumer complaint form is available online at http://www.ksag.org/page/file-a-consumer-complaint.
Consumers can also contact the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint. For consumers in Leavenworth County, contact the Better Business Bureau of Greater Kansas City, 8080 Ward Parkway, Suite 401, Kansas City, MO 64114, (816) 421-7800, or visit http://kansascity.bbb.org.
Consumers on Fort Leavenworth can contact the Post Exchange manager at 684-3249 for guidance on how to address businesses that operate on post under the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
If customers are dissatisfied, they should exercise their rights. Most of the time it is best to start out informally, before filing a formal complaint. Try communicating with the other party.  Write a letter if necessary or talk to the manager. If still unable to resolve the matter, customers have the right to file a complaint. Service members and their families can also seek legal assistance at the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 684-4944.
Editor’s note: Customers with comments, suggestions or complaints about on-post service providers are encouraged to use the Interactive Customer Evaluation system. ICE is accessible online through various Fort Leavenworth Web sites — click on the ICE logo to be forwarded to the Fort Leavenworth ICE Web site. Customers can also visit https://ice.disa.mil.
