    The Friends of the Frontier Army Museum is sponsoring its third annual FFAM Essay Contest for students in grades 9-12. The essay topic is to describe daily life, challenges and hardships on the frontier for western settlers.
    Participants must attend a school near Fort Leavenworth, and submit a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay, double-spaced with proper references. Only hardcopy submissions will be accepted and must be mailed to Frontier Army Museum, ATTN: Essay Contest, P.O. Box 3113, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. 66027 and received by April 2.
    Entries will be judged on focus and detail, organization, sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, spelling, research and bibliography. Winners will win cash prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place and will be notified by e-mail. The first-place winner will be asked to read his or her essay to FFAM members May 1 at the FFAM membership night.
