To prevent freezing pipes, remember to drain and disconnect garden hoses from outside hose connections. If freezing temperatures are predicted, remember to let a steady drip of water run from the highest faucet in the house. Also leave cabinet doors open so room heat can reach the pipes.
Don’t set the thermostat below 55 degrees when planning to leave home for a few days — try to have a friend stop by to check in. An extended-absence-from-home form can be obtained at the Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities office at 220 Hancock Ave. This form lets residents to appoint someone to notify in case of an emergency.
If a pipe does burst, know how to turn off the home’s water supply quickly to minimize damage. Feel free to ask a maintenance technician to help locate the shut-off valve during his next visit.
For questions about maintenance issues, contact the maintenance department at (913) 651-3838.
    Office closures
The FLFHC offices will be closed Nov. 23 in observance of Thanksgiving. In case of a maintenance emergency or wish to submit a work order, call the 24-hour maintenance line at (913) 651-3838.

    Harvest drive
FLFHC is hosting its annual “Thankful Harvest” drive for non-perishable packaged food items and canned goods, as well as disposable baby diapers of all sizes to donate to the Leavenworth Assistance Center. The village with the most items delivered to the Community Management Office between 7:30 a.m. Nov. 27 and 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15 will win a $50 Visa gift card to be used toward a village event. For more information, contact Meghan Fowler at (913) 682-6300.
    Extended absence
FLFHC would like to remind residents to notify the Community Management Office if they will be gone from their home for more than seven days. In addition, residents are encouraged to provide contact information to a friend, neighbor or family member in the local area in case of emergency to allow for adequate care of their home during their absence.
Page 2 of 2 - If an emergency arises during a resident’s absence, a member of the FLFHC staff may need to enter the home. Written notice of the entry will be left in the home if this happens. Contact the Community Management Office at (913) 682-6300 with any questions or concerns.
    Yard maintenance
Barren Outdoor Solutions will continue to perform bi-weekly yard maintenance and leaf removal. Residents who have leaves or lawn clippings can place them in bags at the curb on their scheduled mowing day and Barren Outdoor Solutions will dispose of them. Residents are asked to ensure that all toys, patio furniture, garden hoses and other items that might impede the Barren Team are put away on scheduled mowing days.
    Super Savers
Residents can nominate themselves for the Super Saver of the Month award by submitting a nomination form, which can be found on the FLFHC website at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com. Bring the form and a copy of the most recent utilities statement to the FLFHC office at 220 Hancock Ave. by the 21st of each month.
Families can nominate themselves each month for this award but can only win once per calendar year.
For more information about the Super Saver program or the Utility Conservation Program, contact FLFHC Operations Coordinator Aaron Goldwater by calling (913) 682-6300 or e-mail agoldwater@themichaelsorg.com.
    Utilities tip
Run only full — not overfull — loads in your washer. One large washer load takes less energy than washing a couple of loads on a lower setting. If you need to wash a smaller load, remember to set the water setting lower.
