Unified School District 207 Board opened their regular board meeting Sept. 18 and swore-in its new board member, Lt. Col. Pat Schoof.
USD 207 Superintendent Dr. Keith Mispagel said Schoof, chief of simulations for the Directorate of Simulation Education at the Command and General Staff College, was one of five candidates to fill the one vacancy left by the departure of Lt. Col. Chris Springer.
“The vetting process for filling the vacant board position involved personal interviews with the candidates, and (Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth Commander) Lt. Gen. (Michael) Lundy makes the final selection,” Mispagel said.
Schoof has four children attending USD 207 schools and is involved as a volunteer mentor for students participating in the technology, engineering, arts, math and science initiative.
Patton Junior High School Principal Ryan Wiebe presented his school report to the board. Wiebe’s report included a new initiative, “Raise Your V.O.I.C.E.S.” which he said is an acronym for Valuing the Opinions, Interests and Choices of Each Student.
“Students choose the cluster that matches their interests as predetermined by a survey,” Wiebe said. “Students work with staff facilitators and professional mentors to create a product.”
Wiebe said all clusters would present their products at a showcase at the end of the semester. He said permission was obtained to use elements from “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness,” a book written by Stephen R. Covey, published in 2004.
Among its action items, the board approved fundraising activities for Odyssey of the Mind teams to enable USD 207 teams to purchase supplies for activities relevant to the Odyssey of the Mind competition. Funds will also help defray travel costs to the 2018 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Iowa.
Regular school board meetings are open to members of the community. Meeting agendas and report documents are available to download before and after meetings online at www.boarddocs.com/ks/usd207/Board.nsf/Public.
The next regular meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the board office.
