The Fort Leavenworth Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation calendar for upcoming activities offers a concise view of the wide range of events for participation this summer.
Mary Manago, FMWR’s director of marketing and commercial sponsorship, said the FMWR calendar contains a dozen significant events. She said these include various postwide events, running events and golf events.
“We encourage the community to visit our calendar online at the FMWR website and use it as a resource of convenience,” Manago said. “That calendar contains all of our events and specific details about attendance or participation.”
Manago said the calendar is color-coded into six categories — blue is for arts and crafts, yellow is for community events, orange is for community support, green is for outdoor recreation, red is another category for recreation, and purple is for sports and fitness events. She said visitors could view all listings in all categories at once, or select a single category of events to view.
“Clicking on an event will produce a popup window that contains event name, time and location,” Manago said. “There is a link to more information such as a full description and costs if any are associated.”
“We encourage the community to take a look at the variety of quality recurring programs offered them and to participate as much as possible,” Manago said.
Patrick Shelton, director of Youth Sports and Fitness, said there are three major summer sports and fitness camps this year. He said registration is now open for the British Soccer Camp, as well as for baseball and basketball camps.
“Our programs serve youth from age 3 through the age of 18,” Shelton said. “We also encourage the community to call our Youth Sports office at 684-7525 for more information, costs or simply with questions.”
Shelton said Parent Central provides a global process for enrolling and registering youth for participation in any available Child Youth Services programs. He said most of the activities are presented from a wellness perspective, meaning they are designed to keep young people active. The personnel within the Youth Sports and Fitness office manage and maintain the programs.
“Registering for families is relatively seamless and part of the in-processing upon arrival to any Army post,” Shelton said.
Jason Fullen, who is the assistant director of Youth Sports and Fitness, said he recently attended specific training to administer the fitness elements of their programming.
“It was a three-day course that concluded with an examination,” Fullen said. “The idea is based upon using a young person’s body weight during exercise.”
Shelton said British Soccer Camp typically has a large number of participants and two sessions remain open for registration.
Page 2 of 2 - “Registration deadline to attend the July 10 through July 14 British Soccer Camp is June 23,” Shelton said. “The registration deadline is July 14 to attend the July 31 camp.”
Shelton said the closing date is July 17 for baseball camp registration and July 24 for basketball camp. If a family is centrally registered, any CYS location can do their enrollment.
School Liaison Officer Jessica Brushwood said three major events and activities for youth will take place in July and August. She said these Youth Sponsorship Program events feature youth interacting with other young people who are new to the community.
The Youth Sponsorship Program will give sixth- through 12th-graders a dashboard tour of the Fort Leavenworth community July 28, followed by a party party from 6-8:30 p.m. at Harrold Youth Center.
“The youth-guided tour to see the post allows incoming young people to experience the many opportunities offered at Fort Leavenworth,” Brushwood said. “They will get an inside look at FMWR facilities and walk through the horse stables, among many other activities.”
Brushwood said the Fort Leavenworth Home School group will have a meet and greet at Harrold Youth Center from 1-2 p.m. Aug. 11. She said there will be a back-to-school teen fest from 5-10 p.m. Aug. 18.
