      Munson Army Health Center

When a Munson Army Health Center primary care manager determines a beneficiary needs care from a specialist or needs a service that cannot be provided in the clinic, a referral request is submitted.

If the referral is for a specialist or service available at MAHC, the beneficiary receives a call within a few days from the MAHC Call Center to schedule the requested appointment or service within access-to-care standards.

If MAHC cannot provide the requested care, the referral request is sent to United Healthcare Military and Veterans Services for approval and authorization with a network provider. If beneficiaries are registered on uhcmilitarywest.com, or if they have accessed the website using a DS logon, they are automatically opted in to receive e-mail alerts when important TRICARE documents are available to view online. Also, beneficiaries will no longer receive certain documents and letters in the mail. These documents include authorization and referral letters, billing and enrollment letters, and case management and disease management letters.

Beneficiaries who prefer to opt out of e-mail notification and receive documents in the mail can change their preferences at any time by logging into their account using a DS Logon or uhcmilitarywest.com username and password. Select "My Profile" then "Manage Preferences." Beneficiaries can call United Healthcare at (877) 988-9378 with questions about referrals and authorizations.

When a referral request is approved, beneficiaries should call the network provider and schedule the appointment. After scheduling the appointment, call MAHC’s Referral Management Center at 684-6322 and leave a message with the patient’s name and telephone number, the patient’s name, date of birth, specialty provider’s name, and appointment date.

When receiving specialty care in the network, beneficiaries can select a network provider of the same specialty other than the one UHC has authorized only if their PCM did not specifically request a certain network provider in their referral. To select a participating network provider, visit www.uhcmilitarywest.com to view the list of United Healthcare specialty network providers. If a different provider is selected, notify UHC at (877) 988-9378 to request a provider change.

If the network provider submits a request for specialty care that MAHC is capable of providing, MAHC may exercise the option to provide that care or service at MAHC. Again, the beneficiary is contacted by MAHC personnel and informed that MAHC would like to perform the services, and the beneficiary is given an appointment.

It is important to update personal information in the MAHC system as well as the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. Visit the Adjutant General’s office to enroll new family members. To update information on family members already enrolled in DEERS, visit the DEERS website at www.dmdc.osd.mil/deers or call (800) 538-9552.

  • Col. David M. Cassella | Commander, Munson Army Health Center
Welcome to Munson Army Health Center. It is my distinct honor to command this incredible team of health care professionals. Our team here at MAHC is dedicated to improving the readiness of our soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors while promoting health and prevention services to our families and beneficiaries in the Fort Leavenworth community. Through this care, we strive to develop, support and enhance the quality of life and the resilience of our entire community.
We know that our patients have a choice when it comes to their health care. It is our vision and hope that our passionate and patient-focused professionals will inspire the greater Fort Leavenworth community to proactively participate in their health care, therefore, significantly improving their health and wellness. We focus our wellness efforts through the lens of the Army’s Performance Triad to improve sleep, nutrition and physical activity to enhance personal performance and health.
Army Medicine is at the forefront of meeting the Army Chief of Staff’s objective to improve and sustain readiness. Our ability to deliver services is largely driven by how patients access our facility for care. MAHC continues to be a leader in our region and in Army Medicine in access-to-care standards. Our current appointment availability exceeds standards, meaning there are more appointments available than being requested. One accomplishment we are most proud of is our high customer satisfaction scores — ranking us in the top three facilities in Army Medicine for patient satisfaction. From our appointment clerks to our providers, we strive to take care of each patient to create an excellent patient experience.
As mentioned, accessing our facility is fundamental to receiving services at MAHC. Most people are aware of using our appointment line to call for an appointment. There are several other ways that a patient can obtain an appointment at MAHC. I want to highlight and promote the TRICARE online link. A beneficiary can make acute and future appointments, send messages to their provider, look at lab results and see the status of medication refills. In addition, with our Secure Messaging System, a patient may communicate with the medical home team, request an appointment, consult and renew medications, request and see lab results, or ask a question. For more information on Secure Messaging, see the MAHC clinic front desk staff to sign up for this service.
Army Medicine is working hard to evolve from a traditional health care system, focused on treating illnesses, into a system for health, focused on maximizing our patients’ health and well being. MAHC supports this evolution through the Army Wellness Center in Eisenhower Hall on the Combined Arms Center’s Command and General Staff College campus, which is available to all of our enrolled patients at Fort Leavenworth. The Army Wellness Center houses a motivated team of health and wellness coaches dedicated to helping each client develop and execute a personal plan to improve his or her health. The Army Wellness Center staff employs a suite of tools to accurately measure body composition, metabolism, and flexibility as well as tools and proven education strategies to help develop reasonable and achievable goals to improve health. These services are on par with what professional athletes and Fortune 500 executives receive through their employers.
Page 2 of 2 - We fully recognize that we serve our patients and community, and we sincerely seek feedback and engagement to help us improve. MAHC actively participates in several customer feedback forums. The Joint Outpatient Experience Survey, or JOES, is sent to patients who see our health care professionals. The survey is used by Army and Department of Defense leaders to measure community satisfaction with the care we provide down to the individual provider level. We also actively participate in the Interactive Customer Evaluation program at Fort Leavenworth, providing us more descriptive and personal feedback to see ourselves. All of this is tied together by our patient advocates who add a personal touch to these survey tools and welcome any patient who wishes to speak directly with us. No matter how our patients wish to contact us, we recognize that the feedback of our community is a critical enabler to help us continue to excel in providing great service.
