During the holiday season and year-round, the USDB Sales Store is another shopping resource that carries a variety of items. Gift ideas are numerous among product categories that range from apparel items and flag cases, to a variety of home decor and furniture items.
The unique mission and purpose of the store is to provide a platform that teaches inmates viable trades they can use when they are released. U.S. Disciplinary Barracks vocational training certificates are offered in barbering, carpentry, embroidery, engraving, graphic arts, laundry/dry cleaning, printing, sheet metal, and welding.
“The purpose of the store is to provide vocational skills training. All of the products in the USDB Sales Store are handcrafted or custom made within the USDB vocational training shops at Fort Leavenworth,” said Latoya Mount, budget analyst and supervisor of the USDB Sales Store. “We are self-contained and self-sufficient in terms that the proceeds from store sales support its entire operation.”
The store was established by regulation for the use of active-duty military, military retirees, Reservists, National Guardsmen, Department of Defense civilian employees, non-appropriated fund employees.
The four main shop categories are embroidery, graphic arts, sheet metal and wood. All of the available products can be purchased by visiting the walk-in store at 740 W. Warehouse Rd. The USDB Store website accepts orders from around the world.
The embroidery shop includes golf shirts, jackets and T-shirts, as well as custom authorized military uniform nametapes.
“Customers come into the store and make purchases of the items that we have in stock. If an item is not in our physical inventory, it can be ordered and custom made in one of our shops,” Mount said. “We customize a broad range of general products for our customers and also make unique items from raw material goods. And our prices are very economical.”
The custom embroidering process covers most anything that utilizes logos and lettering of the customer’s choosing. All prices include one logo size up to three inches plus the cost of shipping. Add-on embroidering is available for personalization, such as a name or sports jersey number. The size of a standard shirt design is three inches by three inches, but larger designs are available up to 12 inches. Embroidered military gear items can be ordered in ACU, OCP and black.
The graphic arts shop prices are based on the basic service of custom printing in one location on the item. There are other custom accommodations that allow for any personalization such as an individual’s name, military rank or sports team number.
Groups or units that need custom screen-printed hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts or jerseys can take advantage of a one-time set-up fee savings on small quantities of one to 12 pieces and that includes graphics work involving multi-color logos. The USDB Sales Store doesn’t charge a set up fee when ordering 13 or more pieces. A wide variety of other custom printed items are available as well, including decals, signs, banners, coffee mugs and business cards.

The sheet metal shop creates many products that include ornamental art, a variety of furniture items, as well as several styles of backyard cooking grills made to order from raw materials. The wood shop produces most anything that can be custom crafted using wood. This includes most any type of furniture, various configurations of display cases for coins and flags, and special custom creations, among many other items.
Customer service is an integral part of the USDB Sales Store operation. Brandy Why, a clerk cashier at the store, said the store serves 50-60 customers on a busy day.
“I greet our customers, answer any questions they may have about our products, and assist customers with placing any custom or special orders,” Why said. “Often in order to meet our goal of providing the best service, a situation often requires us to take time for individual consultations about a specific product with a customer.”
All products can be shipped to any address in the U.S., as well as to APO/FPO addresses serving military installations located outside the continental U.S.
The USDB Sales Store is open 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
