About 25 women participated in a self-defense seminar taught Nov. 16 at Harney Sports Complex by Frank Barry, a retired military member who now works at the Mission Command Training Program. The seminar was offered at Fort Leavenworth by the Family Advocacy Program through Army Community Service and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
The free quarterly seminar focused on self awareness, assertiveness, verbal control skills and physical defense techniques. During this session, students learned some wrist grab escapes, counter-choke moves, basic blocks and self-defense strikes.
Dani Henderson was a participant and invited a friend to be her training partner.
“I enjoyed the class and had fun learning the techniques,” Henderson said. “Maybe I can practice them on my older brother or dad.”
Her sister, Kaemmer Henderson, also invited a friend to participate and said, “This seminar gave me more confidence with self-defense. It’s important for women to have that.”
Barry is a former Marine Corps judo competitor and has been teaching martial arts at Fort Leavenworth since 1994. He has earned a seventh degree judo black belt and sixth degree ju-jutsu black belt, as well as black belt ranks in Tae Kwon Do, Akido and Kobudo.
Barry uses several assistant instructors for demonstrations and to help teach the class.
“I enjoy volunteering my time to help with this seminar at Fort Leavenworth,” said Sharon Vandenberg, one of the assistant instructors. “Basic self-defense techniques are important for women.”
The next quarterly women’s self-defense seminar will be in mid-February 2012. To register, contact Jamie Donaldson at ACS at jamie.n.donaldson.civ@mail.mil or 684-2813.
“This course should build confidence for participants as they learn techniques for self-defense and also some things to avoid,” Barry said.
