Fort Leavenworth is starting a new program that will help employees and Soldiers get a free ride to work.
Vanpools, open to active-duty Soldiers and Army civilian employees, are forming to provide five to 15 people in the same area a ride to and from work. One of the riders will be a primary driver of the van, and will have permission to use the vehicle for personal use on weekends or after hours. A tax-free Federal Mass Transit Benefit Program provides up to $230 monthly voucher per person maximum for vanpooling for Soldiers and civilian employees.
Alice Lee-Cook, business development executive for VPSI, the company contracted for vanpooling, said members of the vanpool would share the monthly operating cost.
“The vanpool cost is determined by commute distance, van style and number of riders sharing the cost,” she said. “VPSI offers a turn-key month-to-month program, which includes a commuter van, insurance, comprehensive maintenance, roadside assistance, loaner van, customer support and a van fuel card.”
Registration for the program is required through Debbie Hazelbeck in the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Logistics and Public Works, 684-3307.
DOL/DPW is organizing information meetings Feb. 7 at the Lewis and Clark Center and Feb. 8 at the Post Theater so those eligible can find out more about the program.
Hazelbeck is currently working on a standard operating procedure to govern the program.
“We’re finalizing it so that we can have this down before this actually happens,” she said. “I’m worried with gas prices going up, there is going to be an explosion of interest.”
Hazelbeck said each group would be responsible for organizing the route and figuring out who will ride in the van.
There will be alternate drivers in addition to primary drivers.
Lee-Cook said for drivers to be approved, the following criteria must be met:

  • Driver is 25 years of age or older
  • Driver has a valid driver’s license from the state in which driver resides (active-duty members exempt)
  • Driver has a minimum of five years current and uninterrupted licensed driving experience
  • Driver has a good driving record.

VPSI will do a credit check on primary drivers.
For those unable to attend the information meetings, Hazelbeck can provide a vanpool interest form.
