More than 20 installation village majors, four senior spouses and 26 Fort Leavenworth and Leavenworth organizations convened Sept. 21 for the monthly Community Leaders Information Forum and mayors meeting.
The monthly forum was established to provide a means to disseminiate information about events and services in the coming months. Informational briefs are provided during the 60- to 90-minute forum. After the CLIF, mayors assemble to share issues from their neighborhoods with the Garrison commander and installation representatives. The mayors also use this opportunity to share ideas with other mayors.
Four issues were presented and are now being worked. Speeding is again an issue on the installation, especially near elementary schools, through residential areas and leaving Hancock Gate. Military police will increase patrols in these and other areas and issue citations to persuade drivers to slow down.
The visibility of pedestrians in or near crosswalks is another issue. Mayors indicated that pedestrians using the Pawnee Village crosswalk near Hunt Loop and the crosswalk on 7th Cavalry Road near the park have come close to accidents with vehicles. Military police are looking at increasing the distance for parking cars near the crosswalk to aid visibility and provide additional crosswalk signage to villages.
Mayors shared that some drivers using Hancock Gate have expressed their concern with the visibility of the gates in the evening. It was suggested that reflective tape be placed on barriers so drivers can see that the barriers are down and the gate is closed. The Directorate of Emergency Services is working to resolve the issue.
Street lights along Kansas Avenue, Biddle Boulevard and Kearney Avenue, as well as others in Kansa Village never or rarely illuminate at night, mayors pointed out. The Directorate of Public Works is working to remedy the issue.
The CLIF and mayors meeting is open to the general public to share information about upcoming events and services in and around the Fort Leavenworth community. The next CLIF and mayors meeting is at 9 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Frontier Conference Center.
