The 23rd annual National African-American read-in is at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Jahn Room of the Leavenworth Public Library, 417 Spruce St. in Leavenworth. African-American/Black History Month celebration

The Fort Leavenworth African-American/Black History Month celebration is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Frontier Conference Center, 350 Biddle Blvd. The cost of the luncheon is $10 and includes the guest speaker Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little, the first woman and first African-American chancellor of the University of Kansas. Individuals may attend the event without purchasing a meal ticket. Black History Month Extravaganza

The Black History Month Extravaganza starts at 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. in Leavenworth. The event will feature exhibits and displays depicting important contributions African-Americans have made throughout the nation’s history. There will be live entertainment and a dinner buffet. Hidden Art Locked Away art sale

The Hidden Art Locked Away art sale is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 4, with a preview from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 3, at Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade St. in Leavenworth. Artwork produced by inmates of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks will be featured in the judged show and sale. The annual sale benefits the River City Community Players, a local theater group.

KU chancellor to speak at Black History Month event

University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little — the university’s first woman and first African-American chancellor — will deliver the keynote speech at Fort Leavenworth’s Black History Month luncheon Feb. 9.
This year’s theme is Black Women in American Culture and History.

Frontier Army Museum Open House

The Friends of the Frontier Army Museum Open House is from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Frontier Army Museum, 100 Reynolds Ave. Participants of this event will learn more about the history of Fort Leavenworth. Refreshments provided. Children can participate in an activity with a chance to win a prize. The museum has a new Disciplinary Barracks display. Anyone who becomes a FFAM member during this event will have a chance to win a print of “The Girl I Left Behind Me.” This event is free and open to the public. National Prayer Breakfast

The Fort Leavenworth Commanding General’s National Prayer Breakfast is from 6:30-8 a.m. Jan. 31 at Frontier Chapel. Guest speaker is retired Chaplain (Col.) James E. Shaw. Breakfast is provided through the Fort Leavenworth Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund, at a cost of $9 per person. Donations accepted. Strike Zone New Year's Eve Bash
