Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities is a pet friendly organization and welcomes pets within guidelines. With winter weather on the way, for the safety of pets, FLFHC would like remind residents of the pet policy enforced on the installation.
According to the FLFHC Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, all residents owning pets must submit a FLFHC pet application and complete the housing pet registration forms available at the FLFHC office. All pets must also be registered at the Fort Leavenworth Veterinary Treatment Facility.
During cold weather, it may not be safe to keep pets outside for a long period of time. Owners must provide suitable shelter from inclement weather for pets as well as access to food and water. Inclement weather is defined as excessive wind, rain, snow and temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit or below 50 degrees.
Pets inside homes cannot be left unattended for more than 12 hours. Pets kept outside should not be left outside more than eight hours unless adequate shelter is provided. This is a safety issue — depending on the pet’s breed and size, it may not be safe to leave it outside for more than an hour.
Be a responsible pet owner. Follow these guidelines for the safety of pets. Failure to comply with the pet guidelines can result in the removal of a pet. For more information regarding the pet guidelines, see Section 3 of the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook or call the FLFHC office at (913) 682-6300.
Coloring contest
The children’s winter coloring contest sheets are available online at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhous-ing.com and at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. All entries must be submitted by Dec. 29. Winners will receive a prize and have their artwork published in the January FLFHC Newsletter.
‘Go Green’ contest
FLFHC representatives will patrol villages on Fort Leavenworth in search of three families to be awarded this year’s “Go Green” best holiday display starting Dec. 12. The “Go Green” competition promotes energy conservation during the holidays — winners will use little to no electricity in their displays. Winners will be chosen Dec. 16.
For more information on holiday display guidelines, refer to the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook. Handbooks are available at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. or online at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing .com.
Slim down challenge
Grab a friend and come to the 2012 Slim Down Fort Leavenworth Challenge kick-off event from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 25 at Gruber Fitness Center. Marci Sedwick, a registered and licensed dietitian from Munson Army Health Center, will give a presentation on diet and healthy eating. Registration begins Dec. 19 in the FLFHC office.
Toys for Tots
FLFHC has a Toys for Tots box in the waiting room of the main offices at 549 Kearney Ave. to support the efforts of Fort Leavenworth Marines. Bring new, unwrapped toys to the FLFHC office for donation.
Office closures
FLFHC offices will be closed Dec. 26 for the Christmas holiday. Normal business hours will resume Dec. 27.

Utilities tip
In the heating season, water vapors from bathing and cooking are beneficial because they help humidify the home. Use kitchen and bath exhaust fans sparingly in the winter to keep as much heat as possible inside the house.
