Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities takes pride in our homes and appreciates all that residents do to keep the community charming. One important way to maintain a curb appeal is to ensure residents follow guidelines for garbage and recycling to help keep the streets clean.
Deffenbaugh picks up trash and recyclables on Fridays. In the event of a holiday during the week, trash and recycle pick up is on Saturday. Bulk item pick up is also offered for on-post residents on the first Monday of each month. In the event that the first Monday is a holiday, bulk pick up shifts to Tuesday.
To help keep the community clean, here are some things to keep in mind:
Set approved waste and recycle containers out no earlier than 8 p.m. the night before trash pick up day. Be sure to return containers to an appropriate place near the home once the waste has been gathered.
All items must be secured, especially during high winds, inside the approved containers. If the containers are full, there is a recycling center available on West Warehouse Road across from the horse stables.
Deffenbaugh will only pick up recyclable newspapers, catalogs, phone books, manila folders, junk mail, office paper, magazines, aluminum cans, chipboard, cardboard, and water bottles and plastic detergent containers with their lids removed.
Items that cannot be recycled curbside include books, gift wrap, photographs, trash, plastic bags or string, frozen food containers, hanging file folders, egg cartons, paper cups and plates, pet food, kitty litter, charcoal bags, tissues or paper towels, scrap metals, six-pack holders, automotive product bottles and glass, including light bulbs.
Fort Leavenworth does offer recycling for glass items. Take glass items to the Recycling Collection Point on West Warehouse Road. No sorting required.
A number of residents have asked about getting multiple waste and recycle containers, but at this time all residents are only allowed one Deffenbaugh approved waste and recycle container per home.
Residents are asked to be mindful of blowing trash in the housing areas. Brisk fall winds will easily disperse loose trash, especially recyclable materials, and quickly scatter it throughout the neighborhoods.

Utilities tip
Don’t forget to change furnace filters each month. Not only will this help clean the air that circulates through the home but will foster more efficient air flow and even heating throughout the house. Free air filters may be picked up at the maintenance shop at 800 W. Warehouse Road.
