It is almost time for winter holiday decorations on Fort Leavenworth. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities policy on holiday lighting and decorations can be found in Section 7:L of the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook.
In brief:

  • Decorations can be displayed 30 days before the holiday and removed within two weeks after.
  • Residents can place ornaments on the home and lawn as long as they are maintained and have a proper appearance.
  • Exterior lighting should be used only from 6-11 p.m. Energy conservation is always encouraged.
  • Rooftop decorations and any type of decoration that can permanently damage a home are strictly prohibited.
  • Avoid using nails, spikes and building staples. Clips and tape are approved for fastening holiday decorations.
  • All holiday materials must be fire resistant.
  • Do not overload circuits or use extension cords inappropriately.

‘Go Green’ holiday decorating contest
Beginning Dec. 1, FLFHC representatives will be patrolling villages on Fort Leavenworth in search of three families to be awarded this year’s “Go Green” best holiday display. The “Go Green” competition promotes energy conservation during the holidays — winners will use little to no electricity in their displays. Winners will be chosen Dec. 16.
For more information on holiday display guidelines, refer to the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook. Handbooks are available at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. or online at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com.
Holiday office closures
FLFHC offices will be closed Nov. 24 and 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Normal business hours will resume Nov. 28.
Village food drive
FLFHC encourages all residents to participate in the fourth annual Holiday Village Food Drive. This is a great opportunity for residents of Fort Leavenworth to give to less fortunate families living in the community. To participate in the food drive, bring all non-perishable food items to the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. during normal business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. before Nov. 30. Be sure to label donations with the appropriate village name.
The village with the most donations will receive an extra $50 in village social funds and bragging rights until next year. Last year’s winner was Normandy Village.
Toys for Tots
FLFHC will again have a Toys for Tots box in the waiting room of the main offices at 549 Kearney Ave. to support the efforts of Fort Leavenworth Marines. The box will be available Dec. 1-14. Bring unwrapped toys to the FLFHC office for donation.
‘I’m Thankful for…’ children’s contest
For the holiday season, FLFHC wants to know what children are thankful for. A contest for children of all ages continues through Nov. 30. Stop by the FLFHC office to pick up a submission form during normal business hours; submission forms can also be found under News & Events at www.ftleaven-worthfamilyhousing.com. The winner will be awarded a prize as well as have his or her letter published in the FLFHC December newsletter.
Children’s holiday fun
Bring children to the FLFHC office 2:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 2 to decorate holiday ornaments. These holiday keepsakes can be added to your tree this year or given to family and friends as gifts. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

Utilities tip
According to the website of the Environmental Protection Agency, about 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Buy rechargeable batteries to accompany electronic gifts and reduce the amount of potentially harmful materials thrown away and save money in the long run.
