Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to remind all residents who are vacating their homes this winter to submit their notice to vacate.
FLFHC generally requires a notice to be submitted at least 30 days before vacating a home. Because this is one of the busiest times in the year, departing residents are encouraged to submit the notice as early as possible.
The notice to vacate form is available on the website at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com or at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave.
Once the form has been completed and submitted to the FLFHC office with a copy of orders, the departing resident receives a scheduled move-out inspection date along with a packet of information to assist in preparing for the final inspection. This packet contains a move-out checklist, clearing procedures, cleaning standards, a schedule of charges and a move-out survey. These forms may also be obtained on our website.
For any questions regarding the move-out procedures, see the Resident Guideline and Community Handbook or call the FLFHC office at (913) 682-6300.
Cold weather reminders
Smoke detector batteries should be checked monthly to verify they are in working order and batteries are charged. If a smoke detector malfunctions, contact the Maintenance Office immediately to schedule a work order.
To prevent freezing pipes, remember to drain and disconnect garden hoses from outside hose connections. If freezing temperatures are predicted, remember to let a steady drip of water run from the highest faucet in the house. Also leave cabinet doors open so room heat can reach the pipes.
Don’t set the thermostat below 55 degrees if leaving home for a few days — try to have a friend stop by to check in. If a pipe does burst, know how to turn off the home’s water supply quickly to minimize damage. Feel free to ask a maintenance technician to help locate the shut-off valve during his next visit.
For questions about maintenance issues, contact the maintenance department at (913) 651-3838.
Holiday closures
FLFHC offices will be closed Nov. 24 and 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Normal business hours will resume Nov. 28.
‘Go Green’ contest
Beginning Dec. 1, FLFHC representatives will be patrolling villages on Fort Leavenworth in search of three families to be awarded this year’s “Go Green” best holiday display. The “Go Green” competition promotes energy conservation during the holidays — winners will use little to no electricity in their displays. Winners will be chosen Dec. 16.
For more information on holiday display guidelines, refer to the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook. Handbooks are available at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. or online at www.ftleavenworthfam-ilyhousing .com.
Village food drive
FLFHC encourages all residents to participate in the fourth annual Holiday Village Food Drive. This is a great opportunity for residents of Fort Leavenworth to give to less fortunate families living in the community. To participate in the food drive, bring all non-perishable food items to the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. during normal business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. before Nov. 30. Be sure to label donations with the appropriate village name.
The village with the most donations will receive an extra $50 in village social funds and bragging rights until next year. Last year’s winner was Normandy Village.
Toys for Tots
FLFHC will again have a Toys for Tots box in the waiting room of the main offices at 549 Kearney Ave. to support the efforts of Fort Leavenworth Marines. The box will be available Dec. 1-14. Bring unwrapped toys to the FLFHC office for donation.
‘I’m Thankful for…’ contest
For the holiday season, FLFHC wants to know what children are thankful for. A contest for children of all ages continues through Nov. 30. Stop by the FLFHC office to pick up a submission form during normal business hours; submission forms can also be found under News & Events at www.ftleavenworthfamily-housing.com. The winner will be awarded a prize as well as have his or her letter published in the FLFHC December newsletter.
Holiday crafts
Bring children to the FLFHC office 2:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 2 to decorate holiday ornaments. These holiday keepsakes can be added to your tree this year or given to family and friends as gifts. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

For more information on any FLFHC upcoming events, contact Camri Yates at (913) 565-9806 or cyates@mmhusa.com.
Utilities tip
Try wearing sweaters and socks at home to keep warm — lowering the thermostat by just one degree can reduce energy use by 3 percent. To keep the heat from escaping keep all doors and windows closed, including the overhead doors on attached garages.
