Seasonal decorations are a great way to express creativity and imagination, so Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities  remind residents of the restrictions outlined in the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, Section 7:L.
Decorations can be displayed 30 days before the holiday and must be removed within two weeks after the holiday.
Residents can place ornaments on their home and throughout their lawn as long as the decorations are maintained and have a proper appearance.
Exterior lighting should only be used from 6-11 p.m. Energy conservation is encouraged.
Rooftop decorations and any type of decoration that permanently damages a home are strictly prohibited.
Avoid using nails, spikes and building staples; clips and tape are the approved methods of fastening holiday decorations. Clips and tape must be removed when the decorations are removed.
All holiday displays must be fire resistant.
Do not overload circuits or use extension cords inappropriately.
Tidewater Landscaping is still performing lawn maintenance on a bi-weekly schedule. To prevent damage to lawn decorations, make sure that do not interfere with lawn maintenance. Tidewater is not responsible for any damage to lawn decorations or extension cords left in the yard on the day of scheduled mowing.
Heaters
With the different types of homes offered to Soldiers and their families, there are also many different furnace systems. In homes with a basement, dampers need to be switched from the summer to winter setting. In Infantry Barracks, once the boiler system is turned on residents must use the boiler/chiller system key provided at move-in to make the switch over on each system throughout the home. Residents who have misplaced the key or were not issued a key at move-in can stop by the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave to pick one up.
Do not be alarmed if strange odors come from a home’s air vents. During the months of inactivity, dust has accumulated on the furnace coils and the heat from the first use will be burning it off. This will only happen during the furnace’s first usage of the season. Keep in mind personal space heaters are not permitted to be used in on-post homes.
Winter maintenance
Temperatures are dropping and winter will be here soon. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to remind residents of some cold weather preparation tips. Refer to the FLFHC’s Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook or website at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com more for helpful hints. Call the FLFHC office at (913) 682-6300 or Maintenance Department at (913) 651-3838 with any questions or concerns.
As the FLFHC staff visits neighborhoods around post, we see hoses connected outside homes. According to the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, page 10, it is the residents’ responsibility to remove all exterior hoses from spigots and ensure the valve is completely shut off. Failure to follow policy could result in the resident being charged for neglectful property damage.
In some of the older homes, another method to keep pipes from freezing is to leave sink cabinet doors open and faucets running with steady drip.
Don’t use anything other than ice melt products on driveways and sidewalks. Other products, such as salt, can damage the concrete around the home. Ice melt, including pet-safe products, can be found at local hardware stores.
Residents should also check all exterior doors for any air leakage. If any air is felt or daylight is visible, the door may need new weather stripping. Contact the FLFHC Maintenance Department at (913) 651-3838 to schedule an appointment if a home requires new weather stripping.
The holidays are also upon us. Many families go away for long weekends or vacation during this season. See page 5 in the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook for a checklist of items to address before leaving home. These helpful hints include:

The holidays are also upon us. Many families go away for long weekends or vacation during this season. See page 5 in the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook for a checklist of items to address before leaving home. These helpful hints include:

  • Set the thermostat to 55 degrees.
  • Let faucets drip — not stream — to prevent freezing.
  • Secure all windows and doors and leave a key with a trusted adult.
  • Unplug or turn off all major appliances or any electronics that will not be used.
  • Contact FLFHC Maintenance and inform them when the house will be vacant in case of emergency.

FLFHC appreciates everything residents do to keep their homes and exterior areas in good condition during the winter months. It only takes a few moments to go through these simple steps to safeguard home, property and residents.

During the heating season, keep the draperies and shades of south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to warm the home and closed at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.
