Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to educate residents about the utility conservation program. The following tips can help conserve energy during any season and with any home. It is the residents’ responsibility to practice energy conservation in their homes and FLFHC’s responsibility to provide up-to-date methods on how to minimize utility usage. The goal of this conservation program is to conserve energy without affecting the quality of life.
Conservation tips:
Lights —The most common source of wasted electricity is lighting. Instead of using lights try opening window shades and blinds and let in natural light. Lighting makes up for approximately 5-10 percent of electricity bills.
Vampire electronics — Many home electronics require “standby power,” including battery chargers, internal clocks and sensors. These electronics never power down completely, so an unused phone charger plugged into the wall is essentially wasting energy. Only plug in things that are in use to conserve energy.
Thermostats — Every one degree the thermostat is turned down accounts for two percent off the energy bill. Open blinds and turn heat down during the day, letting the sunlight provide warmth throughout the home. Be sure all doors, including overhead garage doors, and windows are completely shut and secured to keep heat from escaping.
Water — Instead of throwing old pet water down the drain, water a house plant or toss it outside.

Utilities tip
Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs — it really does make a difference on utilities statement. CFLs are slightly more expensive but last much longer and do not produce much heat, making them less of a fire hazard. Read the instructions for proper disposal of the CFL.
