Welcoming new families to on-post community

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to welcome all new residents and their families to Fort Leavenworth, “The Best Hometown in the Army,” and to thank all current residents for being a part of our wonderful community.
Throughout the year, FLFHC provides different activities and events for service members and their families, through the Community Connections program. FLFHC hosts events that help facilitate and encourage family time, introduce residents to some of what the surrounding areas have to offer, as well as providing fun activities for the families who have spouses who are deployed or on a frequent temporary duty station schedule.

Scholarship applications now available

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities is pleased to announce the availability of educational scholarship opportunities to residents through the Michaels Organization Educational Foundation.
The foundation awards scholarship grants to residents of Michaels Organization properties who are pursuing some form of higher education, in college, trade or professional school, or institute.

Program helps spouses when Soldiers deploy

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities offers many exciting and fun filled activities and events for residents. A more personal advantage to being a FLFHC resident is a unique program for the spouses of deployed service members and the Maintenance Department available for all residents.
The FLFHC staff understands the challenges of not having the military spouse around, whether it is the husband or wife. The FLFHC deployed spouses program offers a range of assistance from general lawn upkeep during the warmer months to snow removal during the winter months. Any resident whose spouse is deployed and wants to take advantage of this program can visit the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave. to enroll. Be sure to bring a copy of the spouse’s deployment orders and fill out the questionnaire available in the office.

Take steps for home energy conservation

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to educate residents about the utility conservation program. The following tips can help conserve energy during any season and with any home. It is the residents’ responsibility to practice energy conservation in their homes and FLFHC’s responsibility to provide up-to-date methods on how to minimize utility usage. The goal of this conservation program is to conserve energy without affecting the quality of life.

Residents have some snow removal responsibilities

When snow decides to arrive, residents are responsible for the removal of snow and ice between any common sidewalk or road and the front or back door and driveways.
As stated in the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities will remove snow and ice from starts, stops, hills, school sidewalks and crosswalks, public sidewalks, roads and parking lots in residential areas only if there are two or more inches. During a snowstorm or unsafe weather conditions, snow and ice removal will be delayed until weather conditions ease and return to a safe status.

Inspections required at move-in, move-out

The military lifestyle can be spontaneous with constant change from place to place. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities has housing procedures in place to make the transitions as stress-free as possible.
One of the FLFHC procedures is a 20- to 30-minute inspection. Inspections are required at both the time of move-in and move-out. The following is an overview of the FLFHC inspection process.

Properly care for pets during cold weather

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities is a pet friendly organization and welcomes pets within guidelines. With winter weather on the way, for the safety of pets, FLFHC would like remind residents of the pet policy enforced on the installation.
According to the FLFHC Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, all residents owning pets must submit a FLFHC pet application and complete the housing pet registration forms available at the FLFHC office. All pets must also be registered at the Fort Leavenworth Veterinary Treatment Facility.

Residents recognized as energy Super Savers

With many new families arriving, Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to remind all residents of its Super Saver Program. The Super Saver Program was introduced by FLFHC in July 2009 as a way to reward residents of Fort Leavenworth who make tangible efforts to conserve energy in their homes. Since its inception, 19 families have had the title of Super Saver of the Month. As recipients of this honor, each family received an award certificate, $25 Army and Air Force Exchange Service gift card and the privilege of displaying the Super Saver of the Month sign in their yard, weather permitting.
Congratulations to the North family of Shawnee Village, Super Saver of the Month winners for December. The North family will be awarded with a Super Saver of the Month certificate as well as a $25 AAFES gift card for their hard work and efforts that they have contributed to conserving natural resources. Small changes such as shortening bath/shower time and using their laundry machines efficiently made them the deserving winners for December’s Super Saver of the Month.

Community Connections plans events

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities’ Community Connections Program was established to help residents create memories and experiences throughout their time at Fort Leavenworth by providing a variety of fun, free events.
Some exciting Community Connections events in the near future include a children’s holiday fun fest, children’s winter coloring contest, “Go Green” holiday decorating competition and the 12-week FLFHC Slim Down Fort Leavenworth program from January through March.

Leaving? Take proper steps to clear housing

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to remind all residents who are vacating their homes this winter to submit their notice to vacate.
FLFHC generally requires a notice to be submitted at least 30 days before vacating a home. Because this is one of the busiest times in the year, departing residents are encouraged to submit the notice as early as possible.
The notice to vacate form is available on the website at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com or at the FLFHC office at 549 Kearney Ave.

Know rules before putting up holiday lights

It is almost time for winter holiday decorations on Fort Leavenworth. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities policy on holiday lighting and decorations can be found in Section 7:L of the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook.

Control trash to keep neighborhoods clean

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities takes pride in our homes and appreciates all that residents do to keep the community charming. One important way to maintain a curb appeal is to ensure residents follow guidelines for garbage and recycling to help keep the streets clean.
Deffenbaugh picks up trash and recyclables on Fridays. In the event of a holiday during the week, trash and recycle pick up is on Saturday. Bulk item pick up is also offered for on-post residents on the first Monday of each month. In the event that the first Monday is a holiday, bulk pick up shifts to Tuesday.

Follow procedures to make clearing housing easier

A number of residents moving in and out each winter. To make the transition as simple and stress free as possible, Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities reminds residents of the procedures required to successfully clear a home.
Residents planning to vacate a home in the near future must fill out the “30-Day Notice to Vacate” form that can be found at www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing .com or at the FLFHC office located at 549 Kearney Ave. Once the form is completed and submitted to the FLFHC office with a copy of orders, the residents receive a scheduled move-out inspection date along with a packet of information to assist in preparing for final inspection. This packet contains a move-out checklist, clearing procedures, cleaning standards and a schedule of charges along with a move out survey.

Holiday decorations, winter prep top issues

Seasonal decorations are a great way to express creativity and imagination, so Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities remind residents of the restrictions outlined in the Resident Guidelines and Community Handbook, Section 7:L.
Decorations can be displayed 30 days before the holiday and must be removed within two weeks after the holiday.

‘Vampire electronics’ suck energy away

When we say “vampire,” we don’t mean the white-fanged Transylvanian or the Cullens from Forks, Wash. We mean the electricity that home electronics and appliances suck out of the power grid when they’re not being used. (Of course, we realize that the television has a certain hypnotic, vampirish power over us, but that’s a different problem.)
We’ve all learned from our parents to turn things off when we’re not using them. However, many electronics don’t actually go all the way off — they continue using “standby power.”

Residents Bill of Rights standardizes efforts

In August 2010, the U.S. Army Installation Management Command and the privatized housing partners agreed on the “Residents Bill of Rights” as part of the Army Family Action Plan. Army leaders collected suggestions and recommendations from Soldiers and their families to make the housing processes more efficient and consistent. This agreement standardizes procedures in an effort to provide and guarantee an exceptional level of customer service.
The satisfaction of all residents is extremely important to Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities. High quality customer service helps create loyalty and trust. One of the many reasons for the Residents Bill of Rights is to give residents a clear understanding of how to obtain service and get answers to questions they have.

Follow traffic laws, speed limits in housing areas

Many children are now back in school and taking part in outdoor activities. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to remind residents that complying with all speed and traffic regulations is a priority for the safety of everyone.
Here are a few tips to help keep children safe in the community:

  • Always be alert: Drivers should expect pedestrians on sidewalks and in traffic crossings.
  • Be prepared: When driving through school zones or heavily populated areas leave earlier to avoid being rushed.
  • Comply with traffic signs: Do not drive through a crosswalk until all children are visible and on the side of the street they need to be on.
  • Ditch distractions: Only use electronics when parked.
  • Care: When driving through housing areas, drive as you would expect other parents to drive if your children were partaking in outdoor activities

Update home to prepare for cooler weather

Summer officially ends Sept. 23 and we will enter into the wet and chilly season of fall. Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities recommends that all residents perform minor checks on their homes in preparation for the Kansas winter that will soon be here.
Gutters can often become plugged up with leaves and other falling debris, which could prevent them from properly channeling the water that comes from the roof. Residents who believe their gutters might not be functioning as well as they should can call in a work order to have them cleaned at (913) 651-3838.

Community Connections offers family friendly events

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities’ Community Connections Program was established to assist residents in creating memories and experiences throughout their time at Fort Leavenworth by providing a variety of fun, free events. Upcoming Community Connections events include the free family movie night and the Hallo’weenie Roast.

Families recognized for energy saving, yard work

Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to thank all who participated in the office and community contests in August. FLFHC encourages everyone to be involved within the villages and the community to continue to make Fort Leavenworth “the best hometown in the Army.”
FLFHC would also like thank the Fort Leavenworth community for being proactive and involved with residents who are new to the area as well as those facing the deployment of their service member.
